in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico

La Paz

La Paz has quaint atmosphere and small town Mexican charm where you will experience natural, historical and cultural attractions. Living within the culture enhances your total communication skills. Cultural differences and misunderstandings often create more communication problems than vocabulary! You will learn culturally appropriate interactive skills as you learn the language.

Historically significant since founded in 1535 by Herman Cortés, La Paz combines historic architecture including museums, churches and homes. Modern amenities are available including a wide range of hotels, restaurants, stores, hospitals and universities. Strolling through the Central Park or on the boardwalk along the water you are struck by the ambiance of the city and its people. Annual celebrations include a mix of national and religious holidays, fiestas, sailing regattas, fishing and off-road racing like the Baja 1000.

La Paz possesses a geographically fortunate position, allowing visitors to travel quite easily to the west onto the shores and islands of the Pacific Ocean or east towards the islands scattered throughout the Sea of Cortés.

Our Spanish language school is located in the seaside town of

Hidden in the deepest corner of its charming bay, La Paz possesses an enviable geographic location providing an ideal starting point for innumerable natural history land forays. The surrounding desert is an intriguing, unique and extremely beautiful ecosystem full of endless surprises.

Just south of the city, at the edge of the Tropic of Cancer, stands the Sierra de la Laguna. This mountainous mass was declared a biosphere reserve in 1994.

The Sea of Cortés is home for countless species of marine plants and animals, forming such a unique ecosystem that it was once baptized by Jacques Cousteau as "THE AQUARIUM OF THE WORLD." Whale watching, island camping and trekking, scuba diving, sport fishing, sea kayaking, seabird watching, sailing, sail boarding, surfing and sunbathing on white sand beaches are some of the activities that can be part of your visit.

There is a variety of local tour companies available to help you explore and experience the natural resources and historic sites of Baja California Sur and the Sea of Cortés. Se Habla... La Paz has formed associations with a number of local tour providers to customize packages that compliment the daily and weekly school agenda.

Homestays

La Paz ’s popularity is especially about the friendliness of its people. To fully immerse in the language and culture, students may stay with a homestay family for the duration or selected weeks of their stay. These families are specially selected by Se Habla... La Paz and most have 5+ years of hosting our students, who are matched to the family by filling out our homestay questionnaire sent after the registration is completed. Issues like food or pet allergies are addressed in the questionnaire to assure a good “fit” in this home away-from-home environment. As well, cultural and real-life suggestions are sent to each student about living with a Mexican family to help make the experience rewarding and informative for all. The students enjoy daily conversations with the family members, cooking, shopping, participating in social events, etc. Families are a wealth of information especially about the old and popular culture of Mexico. Lifelong friendships are often established to make this a memorable experience for the student and the family. Returning students often request to be placed with their former families. Former adult students now with age-appropriate children ready to study intensively request that their older children be placed in the safe care of their new Mexican friends.

Exceptionally affordable , families can accommodate adolescent to elder students; the homes are not child-proofed therefore the recommendation of a minimum of age 14 is shared with those families coming with young children.

Included in a 7-night stay (minimum):

  • 2 meals per day, usually breakfast and midday meal
  • Private or shared-with-your-companion bedrooms
  • Private or shared bathrooms
  • Accessibility to school by walking, biking, driving or public transportation
  • Bedroom air conditioning option
