BHA appoints Lord Allen of Kensington as new Authority Chair

British horseracing is entering a new era with the appointment of Lord Allen (pictured above) of Kensington as Chair of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). Effective from 1 June 2025, Lord Allen’s appointment brings a wealth of experience in governance, finance, media, and sports, positioning him as a transformative figure for the sport.

Overview of Lord Allen’s background

A prominent figure in the media industry, Lord Allen has held influential roles at major organisations such as Granada TV, EMI, Virgin Media, and Endemol. He is currently the Chair of Global Media and Entertainment Limited, underscoring his extensive experience in media management. Lord Allen’s involvement in global sports initiatives adds another layer to his impressive résumé. He served as a Board Director for London’s successful bid for the 2012 Olympics and as the Chairman of the Manchester Commonwealth Games from 2000 to 2003. His current role as Chairman and Trustee of the Invictus Games Foundation further highlights his commitment to sports and his ability to lead large-scale events.

Beyond his work in government and media, Lord Allen is recognised for his leadership in various commercial enterprises. He currently serves as Advisory Chairman to Moelis & Company and has chaired other influential companies, including Balfour Beatty PLC and the e-commerce retailer THG. His business acumen will be key to driving commercial growth and fostering partnerships within British horseracing.

Lord Allen’s vision for BHA

Lord Allen has expressed a clear vision for his role at the BHA, emphasising the importance of enhancing both the commercial viability and the reputation of British horseracing.

Lord Allen himself stated, “I am honoured to be appointed to the role of Chair of the British Horseracing Authority at this important time for the organisation. I look forward to building a strong relationship with the new CEO and the Board and all our stakeholders, delivering the vision of building the commercial and reputational aspects of the sector.”

He further stated, “My knowledge, skills and experience from various sectors, including media and entertainment, and having led many regulated and sporting organisations will hopefully stand me in good stead to bring a fresh perspective to this incredible sport.”

David Jones’ endorsement

David Jones, the BHA’s Senior Independent Director and Chair of the Nominations Committee, has spoken highly of Lord Allen’s qualifications. He praised Lord Allen’s outstanding calibre, emphasising his leadership skills and broad experience in both financial and commercial sectors.

Chair of the BHA Nominations Committee and the BHA’s Senior Independent Director David Jones added, “Lord Allen is a very experienced Chairman, and I am delighted that we have appointed a candidate of such outstanding calibre. His record speaks for itself and his impressive leadership skills, financial and commercial acumen, broadcast experience and an understanding of Government will bring a fresh and independent perspective to the BHA’s work.”

British horseracing faces numerous challenges, including economic pressures, competition from other sports, and the need for robust animal welfare measures.
