The anonymous British national utilised private bookmakers on the island of Curacao as punters back Trump for election victory
There are reports that a British gambler has placed, what is believed to be, a record breaking $5 million wager on President Trump to win the US election. The gambler is set to receive a $15 million payout should Trump win, after consulting with Trump camp insiders and using private bookmakers in Curacao who had odds of 37/20.
“Word of this bet has done the rounds and we think it’s the biggest ever made on politics,” one betting industry source told the UK paper.
Betting on politics is illegal in the US but very popular in the UK and other countries. As a result, the 2020 election is set to be the biggest betting event in history.
Trump is looking to cause another upset after the 2016 election and gamblers are certainly backing it.
“Donald Trump will likely wake up with a spring in his step as more and more people think he could stay for another term,” the gambling comparison site OddsChecker said Tuesday.
The head of marketing at OddsChecker, Sam Eaton, described the incredible swing they experienced over the course of a few hours with 71% of money wagered all going on Trump. Paddy Power also had the same experience as over the last 24 hours, 93% of wagers were on Trump.
With the election slowly coming to a close, Jessica O’Reilly of Ladbrokes said that “even at the eleventh-hour, punters are continuing to back Trump at the odds-on offer.”
“The 2020 election is following a very similar betting pattern to the one we witnessed back in 2016. The closer we got to election day, the more money came for Donald Trump,” Eaton said.
“A lot of part-time gamblers will opt to wager on the election today, and naturally given the bigger returns on Trump, they will likely side with the current President.”
With all these last-minute bets being placed on Trump, it will be interesting to see the outcome of what was such a hectic election to date.
